Growing up, Carly was a radio junkie before she knew what it meant to be a radio junkie.
After graduating from Mount Royal College, with a diploma in broadcasting,
she made stops at radio stations across western Canada.
She also took a brief detour to spend some time covering the television entertainment beat,
which was a lot of fun.
In addition to holding on air positions on both radio and television,
Carly's unique sound has been heard on commercials,
interactive media and corporate videos where she can be
the girl next door, the mother, the young professional, the "announcer" or anything in between.
Most recently, Carly has expanded her skills and is using her vocal talents
as an audiobook narrator. Not only does she enjoy voicing the books,
but producing them, as well. Her narrations can be downloaded
on Audible, iTunes and wherever audiobooks are purchased.

I am excited to share a recent chat with the remarkable and talented Carly Kincaid with you!
Carly, how many books have you narrated, and do they have a common thread or theme?
So far, I've narrated 5 individual books and a four-book series. Currently, I am working on another series of 8 short stories. Primarily, they are romances.
I love listening to an audiobook. What do you love most about narrating audiobooks?
I have used my voice, for all of my professional life. So, naturally to be able to do something where I am able to continue using that skill, makes sense. And, the technical aspect of producing the books is also fun for me.
Do you prefer to read in print or listen to stories in audio?
I enjoy both reading print and listening to stories in audio. There's nothing like curling up with a blanket and a good (print) book. But there are so many times I enjoy listening to a good (audio) book while doing other things. You can't very well read a print book while driving. ;)
Lol, so true! But we can listen and drive, walk and listen or even clean the house. Nah! Scratch that :)
Carly, how do you select a book to narrate? Do you prefer a specific genre or types of characters?
When I am selecting a book to narrate, if it's something I would like to read, chances are, I would like to narrate it. But, that's a wide range of genres! Generally, it's whatever interests me, when the options are in front of me.
As a writer I often get asked if I'm a plotter or a pantser. Simply put, a plotter is someone who plans out the book before they write it and a pantser is someone who, 'flies by the seat of their pants', meaning they don't plan, or plan very little. Me, I'm a planster - I like to mix it up lol
So, as a narrator - Do you read a book several times before you record the audio? Or *gasp* do you just about memorize it?
Before I record the audio for a book, I read it through. Then as I go, I re-read it. I also make notes when and where necessary. Sometimes, after listening back to a section that I've recorded, I find that I don't like my read (for any number of reasons!) and I will go back and do it again.
I hear ya! Been there many times, in edits :)
As a writer and reader, I visualize the characters and hear them talking. How do you decide on the specific voice and tone to do for each character?
Obviously, sometimes there are written cues for the way a character speaks, and I try to follow those when I am voicing. But, if there aren't any indicators, whatever I hear in my head, is what comes out of my mouth.
Well, I thank you for putting a voice to my characters in Love On Tour. Listening to the audiobook made them even more real to me :)
So, before you give the characters a voice, Do you have a ritual or routine you do before sitting down to record the audio (such as anything to strengthen your vocal cords)?
Staying hydrated is important for keeping a healthy voice. So, I drink a lot of water and tea. I also see a chiropractor regularly, who adjusts my hyoid. Here's a science lesson: Britannica.com describes the hyoid bone as the U-shaped bone situated at the root of the tongue in the front of the neck and between the lower jaw and the largest cartilage of the larynx, or voice box. The primary function of the hyoid bone is to serve as an anchoring structure for the tongue.) Believe it or not, it can get very tight. So, regular adjustments help me a lot.
I just learned something new and interesting today! But I'm glad I just write and won't need to see a chiropractor :)
In between writing and reading, I'm listening to a book. Do you have an audio book you just loved to listen to? What about that narration makes it special?
The Harry Potter series is amazing to listen to. Jim Dale is brilliant. The number of different character voices he does is absolutely incredible. My daughter thinks I should re-voice that series. But I think they have it under control.
Awe! Daughters are great! I'm with your daughter and Adam Levine, I love your voice! Love the Harry Potter series but haven't yet listened to it in audio. On my list!
Carly, what qualities make a great narrator? Can you share some tips for aspiring voice actors?
A great narrator has patience. If you rush, you will stumble, and you'll have to do it over again. Take your time.

Just a couple of more quick questions, Is there a scene you just loved to narrate? Or one especially difficult to narrate?
I love narrating scenes where I feel I've captured specific attitude or energy. Those are fulfilling. Then there are those scenes when you seem to have marbles in your mouth, and even the easiest words don't seem to come out right. Those are tough.
I must say you've captured my characters in Love On Tour perfectly. Their attitudes and energy voiced the same way I created them. Thanks so much for connecting with me!
