Excerpts from Love On Tour
Audio Book Giveaway – Love On Tour – Excerpt 1
“Twenty cities in five weeks is nothing new. I don’t need time-off.”
Book Publicist, Andrea (Andi) Scott grabbed her coffee cup from her desk. In frustration, she took a swig of coffee that had already gone cold. With that abruptness she didn’t expect, she reached for a tissue and wiped away the remnants from her mouth left behind from that mistake. At five-foot-six, in a three-inch heel, the small-but-mighty, shoulder-length blonde began the pace across her corner office. Any publicist would give their left arm to work at New York’s most prestigious publishing company–Book Publishing Inc. Andi had given everything, including her heart and soul. She worked around the clock. Barely slept, forgot to eat, and couldn’t remember what a social life entailed. Jake Richards wanted her job. Andi knew it. He may not have said it but his actions around the office in the past six months yelled it out loud. Her manager, Rita Tanner, continuously assured her it wasn’t the case. Jake was young, energetic, and just trying to make his mark. Andi knew damn well his intentions were to make his mark in her corner office. At thirty-one, she’d spent five years working day and night to make her mark. Rita attempted to get a word in while Andi paced.
“And those five weeks successfully put Tom Lee’s book in the top ten on the New York bestsellers list.”
Andi darted a look at Rita she knew expressed her anger and frustration.
“If I’m wrong about Jake trying to steal my job, why are you suggesting I take a leave?”
Rita laughed. “Not a leave, Andi. A well-deserved vacation.” Rita reminded her she hadn’t taken one in the five years she’d been with the publishing house.
Andi stopped pacing and huffed. “I have. Twice, last year.” She remembered taking the time off to meet her mother’s new love and his son, and then the family wedding.
Rita stood and placed her hands-on Andi’s arms. “Two long weekends don’t count. If you don’t rest–.” Rita dropped her hands to her hips. “Then, Jake will make his move when you’re burnt out.”
Andi looked into Rita’s eyes, searching for honesty. “So, he does want my job.”
Rita smiled. “Honey, every publicist in New York wants your job.”

A vacation was the last thing she needed. If she were out of the office that long, Jake would have it re-decorated. Morgan, Andi’s assistant, entered the office on Andi’s cue. “There’s a Rick Taylor on the phone. He says it’s an emergency.”
Rick Taylor–Andi’s new-found step-brother. She’d only met him twice and he never called her before. She reached for the phone. “Hi Rick, is my Mom–your Dad, okay?”
“They’re both fine. Or at least I think so. I haven’t seen them since the wedding.” Rick confessed.
Andi laughed. “Good to know I’m not the only distant child.”
Rick laughed. “I think they both know we have busy careers. I try to call when I can.”
Andi admitted she tried to as well. He didn’t get into any further small chat and came right out with the reason of his call.
“I need a favour.”
Andi took a seat at her desk. “Sure. What can I do for my big brother?” Assuming he was going to ask for one of her connections. She remembered he was some country singer’s manager. Though their professions were different, she knew he’d use the same radio stations and television affiliates across the country to schedule special appearances. She hadn’t expected the favour he needed.”
“I need a tour publicist for Brett’s tour that starts in two weeks.”
She understood the panic in Rick’s tone. “Brett is your country singer?”
Rick laughed. “Yes, he is. Brett Hill. Our tour publicist left due to a death in the family. Everything is booked but I can’t tour without a publicist. Brett’s success was huge last year, and the fans are expecting nothing less for this year. Can you help?”
Andi racked her brain for tour publicists she’d connected with. But two weeks wasn’t a lot of notice. Publicists were booked far in advance of any tour.
“That’s short notice, Rick. I can check with my contacts but they’re probably already on the road or booked to start soon.”
His reply threw her for a loop.
“I meant you, Andi. I want you to do the tour with me.”
She rolled her chair back from her desk. “Me? I’m a book publicist, not a country music publicist.” Her remark followed a chuckle. Rick had to be desperate she thought. She was right.
“I know but I’m desperate. I’ve tried a few contacts and you’re right; they’re booked. You’ve toured the country; you know the contacts. I trust you to make it work. You’re as much a workaholic as I am, and I’m touring with you and will give you whatever support you need.”
He was correct with her work ethic. She remembered Rita’s suggestion that she needed to take a vacation. Andi smiled, perhaps she could satisfy Rita and help her brother at the same time.
“Okay.” Andi simply replied.
Rick’s tone quickly changed to sound ecstatic. His excitement made her reflect to the wedding of their parents. Both had confessed their awkwardness that day around their parents’ friends. Most they didn’t know. Others, they didn’t want to remember. Andi remembered the laughter they shared along with the wine. It was nice. She’d always longed for a sibling but never got one. Until now. She could hear his big yes through the phone.
“Seriously? You’ll do it?”
Andi laughed. “Why not? I have four months vacation my publisher is strongly suggesting I take. And you know I’d rather work.”
Rick laughed. “You and me both. Thanks, Sis! I’ll email you the specifics on the tour and the address to meet me. Can you start in two days?”
Audio Book Giveaway – Love On Tour – Excerpt 3
“I miss you Andi. It’s not the same around here without you. I’m hoping you’re not enjoying the music tour more than your book tours.”
Andi had shared the excitement of the tour with Rita. They spoke a few times a week.
“Don’t worry. Just keep Jake from re-decorating my office.”
Rita laughed, “I keep your office locked.”
Andi stopped in front of the mirror. She liked her new attire and turned to look at her backside in denims. She wondered what Brett would think and then scolded herself for that thought. This outfit wasn’t for him even though he’d mentioned the tour had no dress code. She was the only one backstage in business attire. Andi set her mind straight and put that thought to rest. She bought the jeans to fit in with her work family.
“Andi? Still with me?” Rita brought her back to the conversation and she apologized.
“Yeah, sorry, Rita.”
Andi spent most of the past five years with Rita. No one knew her moods and tones better.
“Spill it, honey. Something has taken over your thought. Or is it a someone?”
Andi laughed. “Everything is good.”
“Don’t lie to me. Spill.” Rita’s demand, full of care and concern, forced Andi to drop onto the bed. “You do know me.”
“Better than anyone,” Rita reminded her.
Andi spilled her heart and confessed her cowardly decision to have her brother bring Brett to the radio show, and then pretend to be on a call and direct him to the studio with Rick while she took the other car. Then she asked Rita’s advice on how to get him out of her thoughts.
Rita laughed and joked. “Run. Come back to me.”
But then she told Andi what she already knew.
“Honey, you have feelings for Brett. Can’t deny, fix, or avoid him. Talk to him.”
Rita was right. Always had been. Andi’s confidant, mentor, and only true friend. A friendship that had grown over the past five years. Andi trusted her, completely. At forty, or just below or just above; no one knew Rita’s age–that she never confessed. She’d climbed the ladder, made the connections, and continued to build the empire she’d created. Rita had only one love she lost years before because of her ambition. Along with her managing partners, the publishing house became family, home–her life. Andi had made it her home too. Long hours into the night, brainstorming with Rita at the office or wining and dining connections Rita had introduced her to. Andi knew everyone in the business because of Rita. She not only knew who to call when, she knew their personalities–likes, dislikes, and what she needed to say to benefit her clients. This left no room for a social life of her own, but Andi was okay with that. Her life became her work, her clients, her connections, and a good friend. She knew Rita had her back and would keep an eye on Jake Richards, even just to calm Andi’s anxiety of his eagerness to take her office.
Andi knew she was right. If she didn’t, she couldn’t continue the tour like she had today.
“Why are you always right?”
A simple reply she expected, followed before the call ended. “Because I am.”

Andi opened the door wider, inviting him inside. “Is there a problem at the stadium? Should I get dressed?” She turned away from him and felt his hand on her arm. He pulled her toward him.
“It’s not about the tour.”
Relieved there wasn’t an issue at hand to fix, she knew exactly what he meant. The kiss. Andi sucked back a quick breath. “It’s about last night’s.”
His eyes met hers. Her body felt as though it would melt into a puddle of jelly at her feet. If one look could do that, she wondered what his kiss–No, she reminded herself that happened and how it messed up everything, including the argument with her brother. Rick, her career, the tour, Brett’s long list of women flashed through her thoughts and gave her the strength to say what needed to be said.
“I apologize for my unprofessionalism last night. It will never happen again. This tour, my reputation in the business–.”
Brett interrupted her when he placed his finger gently against her lips.
“Don’t apologize.” His eyes held her stare as he continued, “Don’t. Not if you felt something. Did you?”
The gentle touch of his fingertip and the look in his eyes only confirmed that he felt what she had the night before. Before the kiss, she’d summed it up to a few weeks of simple flirting. That she could control. But the kiss, his kiss had taken away her control.
“The tour, my reputation-.”
Brett placed his hands on her face. His eyes delved deep into hers, begging for honesty.
“The tour and your reputation are not in question.”
Andi inhaled deeply. She fought for inner strength to keep her eyes from watering up. The intense need to be honest with him could destroy both their careers.
“They are.” She pulled back from him and turned away. “They are if I can’t handle becoming a statistic.”
She felt his presence move closer behind her. “A statistic of what?”
Andi turned. She felt his hot breath against her skin. His confused expression almost made her laugh. His lifestyle, his long list of women, had probably formed a belief that brief sexual relationships happened and people moved on without complication. Just as she’d formed that belief. “Another number added to the long list of women you enjoy.”
Her bold statement caught his attention. His jaw dropped. He stood silent for a moment. The air in the room chilled as if the air-conditioning suddenly went out of control. Brett’s eyes drifted to the other side of the room and then back to hers.
“So, that’s why you’re avoiding me? You think it’s just a one-time thing.”
